Movie review.
"Orphan"
I've been hearing some decent things about this movie so I thoughted I'd take some time out and see it.
I really shouldnt have.
The story follows a family who, after having been trough some tough times (alcoholisme, miscarige), decide to addopt a child.
Now why they would to this when they already have two kids is beyond me, its somewhat explained when the mother, Kate (Vera Farmiga) tells her plucky husband John (Peter Sarsgaard) that she wants to give the love she had for Jessica (the child she lost) to someone else.
Appearantly her own kids just arent deserving of that love, the little bastards.
The child they decide to adopt is Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) a nine year old girl who acts just a little to grown up for her age.
After a while strange things start to happen and the audience is left in the dark as to why, could it be the little girl? Or is Kate just being paranoid?
Okay so I lied a little there, we are not left in the dark at all, the movie makes it clear from the get go that Esther is a murdereous little bitch and from there the movie just becomes an exercise in tedium.
I say this because the movie uses one of the most annoying structures I can think of (besided that of romantic comedies).
Only one character expects there's something wrong with cute little Esther but when she mentions things might just be a little "off" the rest just of the characters just shrug it off as her being paranoid.
From there the movie just goes trough the motions of the genre (jump scares galore!) only to reach one of the dumbest plot twists of the last couple of years.
A twist explained by some Bob who wasnt in the whole movie and just comes along, peeks his head around the corner and explains the whole movie for us only to dissapear again, great writing there.
One would think a plot twist might alter the course of the story a little, the only thing it did here was turn the movie in even more of a bog standard thriller with a climax exaclty the same as you've seen in a thousand of movies before.
My advice? Dont watch the movie.
I give it a 2 out of 10.
